Could THIS Be the Hidden Factor Behind Obesity, Heart Disease, and Chronic Fatigue?

By Dr. Mercola
Dr. Stephanie Seneff is a senior scientist at MIT and has been conducting research there for over three decades. However, she also has an undergraduate degree in biology from MIT, and a minor in food and nutrition. She's affiliated with the Weston A. Price Foundation and will be speaking at their November Dallas conference, and so will I. Dr. Seneff has a wealth of information in an area that many are not very knowledgeable about, and that is the importance of sulfur.
Sulfur deficiency is pervasive, and may be a contributing factor in:
  • Obesity
  • Heart disease
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Chronic fatigue
  • And more
She also believes conventional medicine is seriously confused about cholesterol, which is closely interrelated with sulfur. Furthermore, healthy cholesterol and sulfur levels are also highly dependent on your vitamin D levels! Here, she discusses the importance and the intricate relationships among these three factors.

Heart Disease May be a Cholesterol Deficiency Problem...

Considering the fact that conventional medicine has been telling us that heart disease is due to elevated cholesterol and recommends lowering cholesterol levels as much as possible, Dr. Seneff's claims may come as a complete shock:
"Heart disease, I think, is a cholesterol deficiency problem, and in particular a cholesterol sulfate deficiency problem..."
She points out that all of this information is available in the research literature, but it requires putting all the pieces together to see the full picture. Through her research, she believes that the mechanism we call "cardiovascular disease," of which arterial plaque is a hallmark, is actually your body's way to compensate for not having enough cholesterol sulfate.
She explains:

and Me Speak in November

We are both scheduled to speak at the Weston Price Foundation Conference Nov 11-13th.

Please click here for more details.
"The macrophages in the plaque take up LDL, the small dense LDL particles that have been damaged by sugar... The liver cannot take them back because the receptor can't receive them, because they are gummed with sugar basically. So they're stuck floating in your body... Those macrophages in the plaque do a heroic job in taking that gummed up LDL out of the blood circulation, carefully extracting the cholesterol from it to save it – the cholesterol is important – and then exporting the cholesterol into HDL – HDL A1 in particular... That's the good guy, HDL.
The platelets in the plaque take in HDL A1 cholesterol and they won't take anything else... They take in sulfate, and they produce cholesterol sulfate in the plaque.
The sulfate actually comes from homocysteine. Elevated homocysteine is another risk factor for heart disease. Homocysteine is a source of sulfate. It also involves hemoglobin. You have to consume energy to produce a sulfate from homocysteine, and the red blood cells actually supply the ATP to the plaque.
So everything is there and the intent is to produce cholesterol sulfate and it's done in the arteries feeding the heart, because it's the heart that needs the cholesterol sulfate. If [cholesterol sulfate is not produced]... you end up with heart failure."
So, in a nutshell, high LDL appears to be a sign of cholesterol sulfate deficiency—it's your body's way of trying to maintain the correct balance by taking damaged LDL and turning it into plaque, within which the blood platelets produce the cholesterol sulfate your heart and brain needs for optimal function... What this also means is that when you artificially lower your cholesterol with a statin drug, which effectively reduces that plaque but doesn't address the root problem, your body is not able to compensate any longer, and as a result of lack of cholesterol sulfate you may end up with heart failure.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: How Sun Exposure Impacts Your Sulfur Status

According to the conventional view, high LDL is correlated with heart disease, so the idea is that you can take a statin drug to artificially reduce the LDL and you'll be fine. However, as Dr. Seneff explains, if you have high LDL, it's because your body probably needs it to produce cholesterol sulfate, which your heart requires for optimal function. Hence, when you simply remove the LDL, you also remove your body's "backup" mechanism to keep your heart as healthy as possible, and as a result you get heart failure.
But high LDL is correlated with cardiovascular disease (please note that cardiovascular disease is an entirely different disease category from heart failure, which explains a lot of the confusion on this issue), so how can your body produce cholesterol sulfate without the harmful LDL?
How is it produced under normal, healthy conditions?
This is where sun exposure enters the picture. When you expose your skin to sunshine, your skin synthesizes vitamin D3 sulfate. This form of vitamin D is water soluble, unlike oral vitamin D3 supplements, which is unsulfated. The water soluble form can travel freely in your blood stream, whereas the unsulfated form needs LDL (the so-called "bad" cholesterol) as a vehicle of transport.
Her suspicion is that the simple oral non-sulfated form of vitamin D likely will not provide the same benefits as the vitamin D created in your skin from sun exposure, because it cannot be converted to vitamin D sulfate. This is yet another reason to really make a concerted effort to get ALL your vitamin D requirements from exposure to sunshine!
"[S]ulfate actually inactivates vitamin D," Dr. Seneff says. "The sulfated form of vitamin D does not work for calcium transport, which I find very intriguing. And in fact, I think it's the sulfated form for vitamin D that offers the protection from cancer. It strengthens your immune system. It protects you from cardiovascular disease. It's good for your brain. It helps depression. I think all of those effects of vitamin D are effects of vitamin D sulfate."
For those who are still under the mistaken impression that sun exposure is the primary cause of skin cancer, the following explanation may be of great help. In a Weston A. Price article on sulfur,
Dr. Seneff states that:
"Both cholesterol and sulfur afford protection in the skin from radiation damage to the cell's DNA, the kind of damage that can lead to skin cancer. Cholesterol and sulfur become oxidized upon exposure to the high frequency rays in sunlight, thus acting as antioxidants to "take the heat," so to speak. Oxidation of cholesterol is the first step in the process by which cholesterol transforms itself into vitamin D3."
As I've stated before, your body was designed to be exposed to the rays of the sun, and your skin contains all the necessary mechanisms to extract or produce beneficial nutrients from it while simultaneously shielding itself from harm. When you circumvent this natural process, either by using sunblock or staying out of the sun entirely, you lose all the health benefits, and give a variety of disease processes free reign.

Cholesterol Sulfate—The Link Between Obesity and Lack of Sun Exposure?

Furthermore, your skin also produces huge amounts of cholesterol sulfate, which is also water soluble and provides a healthy barrier against bacteria and other potentially disease-causing pathogens that might otherwise enter your body through your skin. And, due to its polarity, it can enter both fat cells and muscle cells with equal ease. Dr. Seneff proposes that, because of this, cholesterol sulfate may be able to protect fat and muscle cells from glucose and oxygen damage.
She also argues that when you're deficient in cholesterol sulfate, your muscle and fat cells become more prone to damage, which subsequently can lead to glucose intolerance; a condition where your muscles cannot process glucose as a fuel. As a result, your fat cells have to store more fat in order to supply fuel to your muscles, and excess fat accumulates as damage increases.
Sulfur also plays an important role in glucose metabolism. She hypothesizes that if sufficient amounts of sulfur is available, it will act as a decoy to glucose, effectively diverting it to reduce the sulfur rather than glycating and causing damage. This would have the beneficial effect of reducing inflammation, as sugar (glucose) is highly inflammatory and wreaks havoc in your body.

The Many Roles of Sulfur

Overall, sulfate appears to be a highly underestimated molecule with vast health implications. Dr. Seneff discusses her findings in great detail, but offers the following analogy:
"[I]f you breakdown the sulfate you will release energy, which means that the sulfate is actually absorbing the energy from light... I think of the skin as a battery – or solar panel you might say – taking in the sun's energy and saving it in the form of the sulfate molecule storing the energy in the sun."
It seems logical that humans would have some capacity to absorb energy from the sun directly, but this is the first time I've heard of a molecular explanation for this capacity!
"I have a lot of thoughts about what sulfate does," Dr. Seneff says. "One thing I'm quite sure of is that cholesterol sulfate is highly protective against bacterial and virus invasions. That's why sun exposure protects you from infection. It strengthens your immune system. That cholesterol sulfate is incredibly important to immunity."
Sulfur also plays a vital role in the structure and biological activity of both proteins and enzymes. If you don't have sufficient amounts of sulfur in your body, this deficiency can cascade into a number of health problems as it will affect bones, joints, connective tissues, metabolic processes, and more.
Other areas where sulfur plays an important role include:
  • Your body's electron transport system, as part of iron/sulfur proteins in mitochondria, the energy factories of your cells
  • Vitamin-B thiamine (B1) and biotin conversion, which in turn are essential for converting carbohydrates into energy
  • Synthesizing important metabolic intermediates, such as glutathione
  • Proper insulin function. The insulin molecule consists of two amino acid chains connected to each other by sulfur bridges, without which the insulin cannot perform its biological activity
  • Detoxification

Sulfate—Essential for Babies

Cholesterol sulfate is also essential for babies in utero. A woman has about 1.5 units of cholesterol sulfate normally in her blood. When she gets pregnant, her blood levels of cholesterol sulfate steadily rise, and it also begins to accumulate in the villi in the placenta—which is where nutrients are transferred from the placenta to the baby. At the end of pregnancy the cholesterol sulfate in the villi rises to levels of about 24 units!
Colostrum also contains high levels of sulfur, even more than the breast milk itself. So clearly, nature seeks to provide the baby with plenty of both sulfur and cholesterol at the time of birth. Interestingly enough, when a mother has high serum cholesterol, the baby's levels are typically low.
Why?
Dr. Seneff explains:
"[Because] it can't get through. The mother has high serum cholesterol I think because she has low serum cholesterol sulfate. I think the two go together. The way to bring down your LDL in a healthy way is to get sunlight exposure on your skin. Your skin will produce cholesterol sulfate, which will then flow freely to the blood—not packaged up inside LDL—and therefore your liver doesn't have to make so much LDL. So the LDL goes down.
In fact... there is a complete inverse relationship between sunlight and cardiovascular disease – the more sunlight, the less cardiovascular disease."
Now, when a baby is born of a mother who has high cholesterol and low cholesterol sulfate, the baby's cholesterol will be low, but will also have fatty deposits in its arteries...despite the fact that fatty deposits are supposed to be associated with high cholesterol.
"The deposits are there, I think, to start this cholesterol sulfate program that's replacing the one that isn't happening..." Dr. Senneff explains. "Children who have adequate cholesterol sulfate delivered from their mother do not have fatty deposits... It's bizarre, but the high cholesterol associated with fatty deposits in the adult (that's causing heart disease) is a solution, not a cause."
This is a complete turnaround in thinking compared to the conventional paradigm!
Furthermore:
"The worst thing you can do is to clobber the LDL... because you're going to end up with heart failure," Dr. Seneff says..

Dietary Sources of Sulfur

Sulfur is derived almost exclusively from dietary protein, such as fish and high-quality (organic and/or grass-fed/pastured) beef and poultry. Meat and fish are considered "complete" as they contain all the sulfur-containing amino acids you need to produce new protein. Needless to say, those who abstain from animal protein are placing themselves at far greater risk of sulfur deficiency.
Coconut oil and olive oil also contain sulfur (and are ideal sources of healthful saturated fats too). Other dietary sources that contain small amounts of sulfur IF the food was grown in soil that contains adequate amounts of sulfur, include:
Organic pastured eggs Legumes Garlic Onion
Brussel sprouts Asparagus Kale Wheat germ
See Dr. Stephanie Seneff
and Me Speak in November

We are both scheduled to speak at the Weston Price Foundation Conference Nov 11-13th.

Please click here for more details.

Any diet high in grains and processed foods is likely to be deficient in sulfur, because once whole foods are processed, sulfur is lost. Additionally, soils around the world are becoming increasingly sulfur-depleted, resulting in less sulfur-rich foods overall. Hard water also tends to contain more sulfur than soft water, which, according to Dr. Seneff, may be why people who drink soft water are at greater risk of developing heart disease.
In addition to making sure you're getting high amounts of sulfur-rich foods in your diet, Dr. Seneff recommends soaking your body in magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) baths to compensate and counteract sulfur deficiency. She uses about ¼ cup in a tub of water, twice a week. It's particularly useful if you have joint problems or arthritis.
As for supplements, methylsulfonylmethane, commonly known by its acronym, MSM, is an option. MSM is an organic form of sulfur and a potent antioxidant, naturally found in many plants.

RED ALERT: FDA Set to Ban Your Supplements

The FDA has issued a proposed mandate that represents the greatest threat to dietary supplements since 1994. Back in the early 1990s, consumers were so alarmed by FDA bullying that they staged a massive revolt. The result was that Congress passed a law prohibiting the FDA from banning popular nutrients (as the agency had threatened to do).
There was, however, a loophole in the 1994 law. The FDA was given authority to regulate ingredients introduced after October 15, 1994.
It has been 17 years, but the FDA just issued draconian proposals as to how it intends to regulate what it now calls "new dietary ingredients". You can find the FDA Draft Guidance on New Dietary Ingredients (NDI's) here. If implemented, some of the most effective nutrients you are taking will be removed from the market. This includes many fish oil formulas and natural plant extracts. A detailed analysis of the FDA Draft Guidance is available here.
These oppressive rules are exactly what the 1994 law (DSHEA) sought to prevent. The FDA is using its authority in direct violation of Congressional intent.
In order for these ingredients you are using today to return to the market, the FDA will require manufacturers to conduct outrageously expensive studies using absurdly high doses, in some situations multiplied by a "safety factor" up to 2,000-times the recommended dosage on a per product basis.
The FDA defines dietary supplements as being "new" if they were introduced after October 15, 1994. That means that even certain nutrients that have been safely used over the course of three decades will be subject to the FDA's oppressive policies that mandate costly animal testing.

The FDA Views Supplements in Same Light as Synthetic Food Preservatives

According to the new guidelines, the FDA believes that "new dietary supplements" must be regulated similarly to synthetic food preservatives. The FDA guidelines have modeled the outrageous safety thresholds after those in place for food additives. This appears to be in direct violation of DSHEA, the law enacted in 1994 to protect consumer access to dietary supplements, which classifies dietary supplements as foods, not food additives.
The FDA proposes that new dietary supplement ingredients should adhere to aggressive safety margins, which are typically reserved for chemical compounds known to be dangerous in all but the most miniscule concentrations.
Since food additives or preservatives such as aspartame, monosodium glutamate, and sodium nitrate are known to cause cancer or other severe health problems, the FDA has implemented safety guidelines which limit allowable concentrations of these food additives to levels that are supposed to be physiologically inert.
The fact that the FDA is trying to impose the same limits upon dietary supplements seems to be arbitrary and completely unfounded. In fact, when someone takes a dietary supplement, their intent is to positively affect the structure or function of their bodies in some way – limiting dosages of dietary supplements to physiologically inert levels defeats the entire purpose of supplementation with health-sustaining nutrients.
The FDA's new guidelines are so flawed that even nutrients shown to be completely safe in hundreds of human clinical studies would fail to accommodate the unreasonable safety margins.
To give you an example, each manufacturer of certain fish oils would have to conduct a one year study where animals would have to consume the human equivalent of 240,000 milligrams each day of fish oil.
Another option under the FDA's proposed mandates is to conduct a 90-day, 1,000 – fold safety margin study in which two species of animals, one being non-rodent – likely young beagle dogs, will theoretically consume the equivalent of 2.4 million milligrams of fish oil daily. We know of virtually no species can tolerate this high dose, so by default, FDA guidelines will make it impossible for certain omega-3 supplements to be sold. (Note typical dose of EPA/DHA people take each day is around 2,400 mg—100 times less than what the FDA proposes must be tested.)
Since these are not patented drugs, no supplement maker will be able to afford these "safety" studies, which means that many of the nutrients you now purchase at low prices will convert into high-priced drugs.

Pharmaceutical Industry Profit Threatened By Low Cost Supplements

It appears that the FDA is claiming that dietary supplements are unsafe, and in order to "protect consumers" the agency must place a stranglehold on the dietary supplement industry by requesting exorbitant safety testing. These ludicrous safety thresholds are in excess of those required by pharmaceutical drugs despite studies showing supplements are far safer than drugs.
According to the 2001 report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), of the substances implicated in fatal poisonings in 2001, 84.6 percent were pharmaceutical drugs, with analgesics being implicated as the primary cause of death in 32 percent of fatalities or 341 deaths. This compares with 0.8 percent for all dietary supplements combined, even including substances such as dinitrophenol, a dangerous (and illegal) substance banned in 1938, as well as the central nervous system stimulant Ma Huang (Ephedra). Interestingly, the anti-asthma drug theophylline alone was responsible for 15 deaths, 66 percent more than all the available dietary supplements combined.
There is, however, a massive economic benefit for the drug industry if the proposed guidelines are enforced by the FDA. Health conscious Americans who properly supplement slash their risk of degenerative disease. The FDA's new rules, if enacted, will force the price of many supplements to surge upwards, while removing many effective ones altogether. That means that more aging people will have to rely on side effect laden prescription drugs to treat the degenerative diseases they will contract because they will be denied access to health-promoting nutrients.

What You Can Do to Stop this Impending Carnage!

No one can sit on the sidelines with an emergency of this magnitude about to befall everyone who depends on dietary supplements. As citizens, we have the constitutional right to petition the government to redress our grievances. In this case, the FDA proposals pose a direct threat to our health and longevity.
We therefore have to take extraordinary measures to defend our right to continue using supplements that our very lives depend on, and to gain access to new natural ingredients that demonstrate efficacy in scientific studies.

Recall how Consumers revolted back in 1994 and the result was a glorious victory over FDA tyranny!
Let your voice be heard by exercising your right to petition the government against these serious violations of the law and scientific principle. Please be sure to call, fax, or send a certified letter to your representative - emails can be easily dismissed.
Here is a set of talking points for your consideration:
  • My name is [Name] and I am a constituent of [Congress Member's name].
  • I am very concerned about the new FDA draft guidance on dietary supplements and new dietary ingredients.
  • I request that Congress hold hearings and take action to review the FDA's draft guidance and stop their overreach of power.
  • The FDA's draft guidance flies in the face of the original congressional intent of the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act: The guidance turns what was meant to be a simple notification system for new dietary ingredients into a preapproval scheme that Congress did not intend to create.
  • Congress recognized that dietary supplements are natural ingredients and therefore inherently safer than drugs and chemical food ingredients. It did not intend that the FDA would have the power to approve or reject dietary supplements.
  • The FDA's draft guidance creates unnecessary regulations that limit my access to dietary supplements I rely on. The expensive and burdensome process will force between 20,000 and 42,000 dietary supplements to be removed from the market and will increase the cost of those supplements that remain.
  • The draft guidance hurts our economy. Expert analyses show that this guidance will cause a total economic loss of $21.2 billion to $39.8 billion annually.
  • Thank you for your time.
Tips:
  • Be courteous and respectful.
  • Keep your comments brief and focused on the facts.
  • Always thank the staff member for their time taking your call.

SAMPLE LETTER TO CONGRESS:
The Honorable _________________________ Washington, DC
In direct violation of the law, the FDA is threatening to ban my access to new dietary supplements.
The FDA defines dietary supplements as being "new" if they were introduced after October 15, 1994. That means that nutrients that I have been safely using over the course of three decades will be subject to FDA's oppressive policies that mandate costly animal testing, which translates into forced withdrawal from the market, and higher prices for me if the supplement is ever allowed to be sold again.
The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 states that:
"The Federal Government should not take any actions to impose unreasonable regulatory barriers limiting or slowing the flow of safe products and accurate information to consumers."
It says that Congress finds that:
"dietary supplements are safe within a broad range of intake, and safety problems with the supplements are relatively rare."
And it says that:
"legislative action that protects the right of access of consumers to safe dietary supplements is necessary in order to promote wellness."
This draft guidance does the exact opposite of what Congress intended. It imposes unreasonable barriers that limit and slow the flow of safe products and accurate information to consumers. I call upon Congress to:
  1. Uphold the landmark legislation it passed seventeen years ago, and to direct the FDA to revise its New Dietary Ingredient draft guidelines to reflect DSHEA's (and Congress's) stated values and goals.
  2. Vote against the newly introduced Dietary Supplement Labeling Act as this would give the FDA even greater arbitrary powers to remove safe dietary supplements from the market, and will profoundly impact this nations' health in a negative way.
All of these proposals result in wasteful federal spending, while at the same time impose a massive new "regulatory tax" on consumers and the vitamin industry.
Kindly let me know what actions you are taking in response to the urgent issues raised in this letter.
Sincerely,

The Easiest Way to Eat ALL the Veggies You Need Every Day...

By Dr. Mercola
Story at-a-glance
  • Juicing is a simple way to reach your daily target for vegetables, and allows you to add a wider variety of vegetables to your diet that you might not normally enjoy eating whole.
  • Health benefits for juicing include increased absorption of nutrients, and improved detoxification and fat loss.
  • Ideally, you'll want to consume a minimum of 16 ounces of juice a day. Strive for a full quart, split between the morning and the afternoon.
  • Peel from oranges and grape fruits should never be juiced as they contain toxic oils. Organic lime peel is safe to use.
Juicing is a powerful tool that can accelerate your progress towards optimal health. Virtually every health authority, even conventional doctors, recommend 6-8 servings of vegetables and fruits per day but very few of us actually get that.
In my life I have found that juicing is a simple and easy way to virtually guarantee that you will reach your daily target for vegetables. I typically juice every day and consume from a pint to a quart of green juice daily.
Juicing also helps you absorb all those wonderful nutrients from the vegetables. This is important because most of us have impaired digestion as a result of making less-than-optimal food choices over many years. Juicing will help to "pre-digest" the veggies, so you receive most of the nutrition rather than having it go down the toilet.
Another benefit of juicing is that it allows you to add a wider variety of vegetables to your diet that you might not normally enjoy eating whole.

How Much Juice Should You Consume?

Cherie recommends a minimum of 16 ounces of juice a day. Ideally, you'll want to strive for a full quart of juice, split up between the morning and the afternoon.
My personal recommendation is to juice it all at once, to save time, then store it properly and drink it throughout the day.
Cherie says she's got her juicing routine down to 10 minutes, but then again, she's an expert. Pour your juice into a FoodSaver, or a glass Mason or Ball jar filled to the top so there is no oxygen, and put it in the fridge immediately. FoodSaver has an attachment for the jars that will vacuum seal it for you and suck out most of the oxygen. You're probably going to retain well over 90 percent of the nutritional value if you do it in that way and consume it within 12 to 24 hours

What To Do with the Pulp?

Many are concerned about wasting the pulp and throwing it away. Well that can easily be solved by composting it into your vegetable or ornamental garden. However, an even better solution would be to eat it.
From a nutritional perspective it is far more useful to eat the whole vegetable as the fibers actually serve as a prebiotic and raw fuel for your good bacteria to grow, and as a weed killer that actually helps to eradicate harmful organisms like yeast and pathogenic bacteria.
You are probably thinking "how disgusting," and "why would I ever want to do that?"
Well if you dress up the pulp with some Himalayan salt and other condiments that you may enjoy, like balsamic vinegar and crushed red peppers, it becomes far more palatable. What I have recently figured out though is if I put a few lightly poached eggs over the pulp with some melted fresh raw organic butter, it really is turns it into a delicious meal.
The butter and eggs provide fat and protein that actually balance out the meal.  I used to feel hungry after juicing but since I started eating the pulp with poached eggs I feel very full and satisfied.
Some might ask why I don't  just use a powerful mixer like a Vita Mixer and have less mess to clean up and prepare it quicker. Well there are several problems doing it this way as the speed of the Vita Mixer is too high and can actually damage some of the nutrients in the vegetables.  More importantly is it is MUCH less palatable as it becomes a thick, virtually undrinkable slurry rather than a tasty meal and refreshing thin juice you can drink right down.
One of my newer developments is to take the pulp and put it in a dehydrator at 104 degrees for 6-12 hours, until it is dry and make vegetable pulp crisps. I put Himalayan salt and other seasonings on it like crushed red pepper, and I use it as a bread substitute, particularly for the four raw organic pastured chicken egg yolks I have almost every morning. The texture really makes it a very palatable breakfast. I also use one avocado and some red onions.

Juice According to Your Nutritional Type

Although vegetables are generally "healthful," it's still important to take your nutritional type into account when juicing, both in terms of the amount you consume, and the types of vegetables and add-ins you use.
According to Nutritional Typing principles, if you are a carb type, then vegetable juicing is highly recommended to help you regain your health. Juicing is also beneficial for mixed types.
Protein types, however, need to be a bit more cautious though and follow some specific guidelines to reap optimal results.
Celery, cucumber, spinach, asparagus, string beans and cauliflower are the best options for protein types because they're lower in potassium.
You can also add some dark leafy greens like collards, kale, and dandelion greens, but do so cautiously and pay careful attention to how you feel, because these vegetables are very high in potassium and can cause biochemical imbalances in protein types.
Additionally, to make the juice compatible with protein type metabolism (which also needs higher amounts of fat), it is important to blend in some type of raw fat, such as raw cream, raw butter, raw eggs, avocado, coconut butter, or freshly ground organic flax or hemp seeds.

Healing Through Juicing—The Juice Lady's Story

Cherie Calbom earned her nickname "The Juice Lady" back in 1991, when she worked for the Juiceman company. But she's been passionate about juicing far longer.
"[Y]ears ago, I had chronic fatigue syndrome; fibromyalgia in my late 20s; hypoglycemia; allergies; candidiasis—a long list of problems and no hope to get well," Cherie says.
"I decided I was going to find a way; there had to be a way to get well. So I started going to health food stores and reading. I found an old Norman Walker book… I got my first juicer and I embarked on this five day vegetable juice cleanse, and continued that through three months of juicing. I changed my diet completely.
One morning, I woke up and thought somebody gave me a new body in the middle of the night. It was like WOW! I felt completely healed."
However, it bears mentioning that it wasn't an entirely smooth ride.
"Along the way, I felt worse before I felt better. No one had talked about the detox reactions. My dad kept saying, "I think you're killing yourself with this juice program."…I was definitely detoxing."
In Cherie's case, it took three months before she suddenly felt completely renewed.
Interestingly, three months is also the average lifespan of red blood cells. So in three months you should have renewed most all of your red blood cells. In Cherie's experience, this is the typical time frame for most people before they see any dramatic improvement in their health.

The Healing Power of Wheatgrass

Although many don't fancy the taste of wheatgrass, it's a potent healing and detoxing ingredient. You'll need a masticating juicer in order to use it however, as it'll just shoot out of a centrifugal juicer.
Cherie buys flats of wheatgrass from her local co-op, but you can also order them from Whole Foods. Most local food stores only sell it in small containers, which you might get 2 oz. from, if you're lucky. If you buy a flat of it, you'll have enough to last you several days. To keep it fresh, place it in front of a window and spray some water on it daily.
"It's so good!" Cherie says. "It's a grass. It's like a sprout. It's new life; loaded with chlorophyll and all of these wonderful vitamins, minerals, enzymes, biophotons and some amino acids. It's just powerful.
… They say that the chlorophyll molecule in there is similar to our hemoglobin molecule."
… I've consulted at a center that uses wheatgrass juice for people who go through this program… I've seen amazing things happen for people drinking 5 oz. of wheatgrass juice a day: 2.5 oz. in the morning and 2.5 oz in the afternoon. Try it. That's all I can say. Just give it a try."
It is really bitter though, so you may want to add a small amount of lime or liquid stevia to improve the flavor. Limes are great as they are virtually fructose free.

Detoxing—An Important Part of Optimal Health

Juicing is one way to detox your system and is in fact one of the reasons why some people start juicing in the first place. Wheatgrass is particularly helpful in this respect. It provides nutrients that accelerate and facilitate detoxification, especially in your liver where most of your body's detox occurs.
However, about 100-times more of the toxins are stored in your fat than in your blood. And although juicing may help you shed excess fat, which would reduce toxic stores, it will not in and of itself draw it out of your fat. More aggressive intervention is required for that.
I recently encountered a surgical oncologist who has a great detox program. He uses high dose niacin to cause lipolysis (breakdown of fat), in conjunction with exercise to raise your core body temperature. Then you spend 40 minutes in an infrared sauna. Doing this process daily for a month causes your body to excrete stored toxins from your fat.
However, this is not a detox cure to dabble with at home.
First of all, 20 to 25 percent of people cannot tolerate niacin. It causes massive flushing. Second, although it's a vitamin, at the doses required for detox, it's treated as a drug. He starts his patients out at about 100 mg and progresses all the way up to 5,000 mg, which is a massive dose. You'll be beet red from the niacin flush! So it has to be used with extreme caution and only under a physician's care.

Detoxing with Juicing

Juicing, however, is also a powerful way to lose body fat, and because the juice contains high amounts of antioxidants it can help bind toxins when they get released.
"You are going to be losing fat and when those fat cells are breaking down and all those toxins are getting released, you need a lot of antioxidants to get them out of your system and render them harmless. That's where juicing is just powerful," Cherie explains.
"The beta carotene and other carotenes are wonderful for the liver and a wonderful part of detox. I've worked with a lot of people on various cleansing programs that I've designed and juicing is a big part of that along with nutrients and herbs to help the liver detox. I wouldn't be without it.
I don't like just a straight water fast… When I did an internship with a nutritional medical doctor, he had some people coming in that had done just straight water fast and had gotten into major problems because of it.
So I think it's very important to have hearty vegetable juices for cleansing or detoxing your body. People that do, even though you get symptoms (the Herxheimer reaction they call it), seem to do a whole lot better when they've got the fresh vegetable juices than when they don't."

What about Fasting?

Personally, I've been opposed to fasting. It works well for some people, but I believe it's not entirely suitable for strong protein types like myself, simply because we need high amounts of protein. Obviously, if you're doing a juice fast you're getting some protein but it's a rather minimal amount. My concern is that it might cause you to lose muscle as well as fat. Intermittent fasting can be used on occasion.
My concerns may be unwarranted however.
According to Cherie, short fasts, lasting no more than two or three days do not appear to have any impact on muscles. Juice fasts lasting longer than a week however, may lead to muscle loss.
"I'm a protein type and I did a five-day fast that one time to kind of kick off my program. It's wonderful to give your system a rest where your body is not having to work to break down all of this stuff that we eat… It can then really begin to work on detox, on repair, on rejuvenation. I've done one about every year for three days and I always add in wheatgrass."
When doing a juice fast, Cherie recommends consuming between one to two quarts of juice a day. Also remember to break your fast with very light foods, such as cold raw soup and maybe a dehydrated cracker.
"There are a lot of people who like to take one day a week to give their system a rest. A nice way to do that is to do an all liquid breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you don't feel so deprived. You've slept through most of it and yet, you've given your system a real rest and a chance to do some cleansing. Then just have a really healthy dinner the next night," Cherie recommends.

Cherie's Vegetable Recommendations

With respect to specific vegetable recommendations, here's Cherie's top picks:
  • Dark greens, such as collard greens, Swiss chard and kale
  • Ginger root, for its anti-inflammatory properties
  • Lemons, which are high in vitamin C and bioflavanoids. If organic you can also juice the rind
  • Celery
  • Cucumbers (leave the skin on if organic)
  • Parsley, which is rich in vitamin C, bioflavanoids, iron, minerals and chlorophyll
  • Beet greens (the beets are good for your liver, but they're high in sugar, so use them very sparingly)
  • Organic carrots (avoid conventionally grown carrots as they tend to be highly contaminated with pesticides). Use carrots sparingly, however, as they're very high in sugar. Avoid them if you have candida, hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, diabetes, or cancer.
She also saves broccoli stems, the bottoms of cauliflower, and the stems from fresh asparagus and juices those. It's a great way to reduce waste.

Special Concerns and Warnings

Please note you should never juice the peel from oranges or grape fruits as they contain toxic oils.
Limes do not contain these oils and are safe to juice. Only juice organic lime rinds however, to avoid contaminating your juice.
Additionally, you'll want to rotate the vegetables you use, as consuming the same vegetables every day for an extended period of time can cause you to develop sensitivities or allergies. So switch things up regularly and try different recipes.

Wellbutrin Review-Wellbutrin Withdrawal Help

wellbutrin side effectsOften times people feel like they are on a roller coaster trying to quit then starting back up because the withdrawals are too much for them to handle.  The following tips are on getting through withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor first never try to stop taking Budeprion XL without your doctor’s help.  Going through withdraws can be dangerous without consulting your doctor.

Your doctor may not agree that you no longer need the medication.  Try to meet each other both ways and cut your dosage in half, for awhile and see how you feel.  Never cut back more without you doctors approval.

Make a plan for when you are going to start.  It is easier to do if you have nothing to worry about.  So start when you have vacation time limit your activities as much as possible.  You may feel like not being around people at all because they will not understand what you are going through and it is irritating trying to explain it.

Realize that you are going to feel withdrawals no matter how you quit.  There is a long list of withdraw symptoms. Usually you change the dosage every two weeks depending on how high a dosage you are taking. Treat your body right. Adenocarcinoma Review – Examining The Types of Lung Cancers

Adenocarcinoma Review – Examining The Types of Lung Cancers

lung cancer

There are many types of lung cancers. However, according to the histopathologic factors, the types of lung cancer are:

  • Oat Cell Carcinoma or Small Cell Carcinoma -The tumor in cancer is made of unspecialized small cells.

  • Adenocarcinoma – It is the lung cancer of glandular tissues, the cancer cells form glandular cells in Adenocarcinoma.

  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma – In this the cancer occurs in the layers of the bronchi.

  • Large Cell Carcinoma - In this lung cancer, anaplastic cells that are large in size form in the bronchi usually.

  • Broncho Undifferentiated and mixed Pulmonary Carcinoma

However all of these are divided into two main categories because of there different treatments, one is non small cell lung carcinoma and the other is small cell lung carcinoma. Small cell lung carcinoma is hard to treat because by the time it is diagnosed it has spread to a large portion of the lung. It is usually by chemotherapy and radiation therapy that is employed to treat it. Whereas, non small cell carcinoma is not malignant and the tumor can be cut away.

Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma

lung cancer

NSCLC includes large cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Towards the outer edges of the lungs is the Large cell carcinoma and occurs in the form of masses, scar and nodules mostly. Small cell and Squamous cell carcinoma are located in the center of the lungs and is similar to inflammation of the lungs in appearance. It forms pit like masses. The slow growing Squamous cell cancers takes long to develop into a tumor. Adenocarcinoma has much worse prognosis as compared to the squamous cell cancer. The large cell cancer prognosis is like that of adenocarcinoma.

Small Cell Lung Carcinoma

malignant mesothelioma

Small cell lung carcinoma is the main reason of most of primary lung cancers. Approximately 20% of the lung cancers are Small cell lung carcinoma. Both the groups Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma and Small cell lung carcinoma are important to know as tow different types as both require different treatments and care. Small cell lung carcinoma spreads fast and reaches in small and distant parts of the lungs. It is hard to diagnose and by the time you know you have Small cell lung carcinoma, it has spread to the distant parts. It is only treated through radiations and chemotherapy. It is however highly responsive to both of these treatments.

Asbestos Related Lung Cancer

This kind of cancer differs from Malignant Mesothelioma Cancer in that the cancerous cells begin developing from within airways. Lung cancer can develop in response to asbestos irritation in the trachea, bronchial tubes, or bronchioles and spread to other organs throughout the body if not diagnosed and treated early. Cigarette smokers who are also exposed to asbestos have a significantly heightened risk of developing lung cancer when compared to non-smokers. Compensation is already being recovered on behalf of thousands of patients and families of those exposed to asbestos and diagnosed with lung cancer.

17 Day Diet Review – Low Carb Diet – Why Aren’t You Losing Weight?

17 Day Diet Review – Low Carb Diet – Why Aren’t You Losing Weight?

Low Carb Diet  Why Aren't You Losing Weight?

Try This 1000 Calories a Day Diet And Get This Guide And Sample Menu

what is diet, what is a diet, a diet, diet and, diet to, to diet, and diet, diet or I was on a thousand calorie a day diet and I take a few weeks and I lost quite a bit of weight and the food I was eating was fairly interesting too. When eating this amount of calories in a day, it should never be a diet with a long term and you must check with your doctor before starting this 1000 calorie a day diet that I assure you will help you.
If you have a very physical job or you are just a very active person, this diet is not really for you, but if you are like me and not that active you should be ok. If you don’t know the calorie content of all the different diet foods, you can either buy a calorie book or you can get the list of calories online.
There are many low calorie and low fat foods available now days, so you should be able to keep to a 1000 calorie diet very easily, and don’t forget, this is to diet for short term . Once you have lost your desired amount of weight, you should gradually start to eat more calories and then, just keep an eye on what you eat.
You will probably find that by the time you have reached your desired weight, you will know what the calorie content is in most of the food you eat. My wife and I know the calories of most diet foods without even consulting the book and therefore it makes it a lot easier to arrange meals and when in the supermarket you are not looking at every single label for the calorie content.
Sample One Day Menu with Calorie Total
Breakfast
1 ½ oz bran flakes – 135, ¼ pint semi skimmed milk – 65
Lunch
2 slices wholemeal bread – 200, 2 oz lean ham – 100, 2 oz low fat cottage cheese – 44, 1 oz red bell pepper – 9.
Snack
1 medium size apple – 60.
Dinner
3 oz lean ground beef – 150, ½ medium size onion – 15, 2 ½ oz green bell pepper – 20, 1 small tin chopped tomatoes – 17, 1 tablespoon ketchup – 20,           1 oz pasta – 100.
Snack
Low fat fruit yoghurt – 100      Total calories 998
what is a dietThere are many other low carb diet foods you could include in your daily calorie allowance. If you try cutting down a little bit on meat, pasta, rice, bread and on cakes, biscuits, pies and sweets. It is very surprising, the difference it makes just by having a couple of ounces less of meat a day and when it comes to  pasta and rice, just have 1oz instead of 2 or 3. When you think that both pasta and rice are one hundred calories per 1oz dried weight and bread on average is about the same calories per slice, and the savings that you make can be used on extra, low calorie treats.
Low fat fruit yoghurt is a nice snack and there are also some low calorie cereal bars in the stores. Some of the lowest calorie fruits are strawberries, melon, cranberries and blackberries, and why not have some, low fat crème fraiche on the fruit. Try to keep away from butter, fat and oil.
Apart from the possible exception of olive oil, these have a very high calorie and fat content, although olive oil is relatively healthy, it is very high in calories too, so be careful how much you use. When my wife and I were on this diet we worked out our next days calories the previous evening, you will probably find that the low carb diet is much easier if you plan your meals.
I wish you luck on the above low carb diet and I hope you get to your desired weight and then after that, its just a matter of being a little bit more conscious of what you are eating. After you have been calorie counting for a while it will become second nature and this will be very useful later on after you have finished the low carb diet.
There is something I was told some years ago, which is always worth bearing in mind, and that is, if you eat more calories than you are expending in energy you will gain weight. It seems obvious but not many people look at it in that way.
what is diet,
what is a diet, what is the diet
